Creating my new craft.

Published August 23, 2013 by theycallmemrstibbs

Well, I say new craft, it’s new to me and obviously not other people.

I’m talking about crocheting. Christopher’s granny taught me at my request when she came to visit in April. She did seem surprised that I wanted to learn how to do it, as apparently most knitters can’t crochet. But I wanted to give it a go.

She had brought some crocheting books with her and already had some hooks that I had bought a long time ago.

Of course she started with the basics like chains, single crochets, double crochets and half double crochets. I know that doesn’t sound simple but trust me when  you have read trough things knowing how to do the stitches makes it easier.

The first thing she started me on was granny squares, and I’m just not calling them that because it was granny who taught me, that is the actually name.

I know it has a glare on the page but I just needed to show you I wasn’t making it up.

So I proceeded to make squares, and trust me once you get started it’s kind of hard to stop doing it.

Above isn’t sewn together as yet as I cannot decide the order to do them in.

After making a lot of granny squares I decided I should try to find something else to make. I thought to things I wear and/or have lost. Then it hit me I always wear bow clips in my hair and I had recently lost one of a set of two. So I got looking for a pattern.

I didn’t have a book with this so I googled it and came up with the following site for my bows.

This was one I made and added ribbon to.

From there I got the idea of trying to make something that wasn’t for use in my hair but that I can decorate things with and of course the girly side of me thought Ooo hearts. And it stuck. So this time I searched YouTube how to make them and found this pattern by Crochet Geek. I loved the name and I gave the pattern a go.

You obviously start with normal wool.

The make a chain of five stitches to make a ring.

After this you do 12 double crochets to make you centre.

From here you might be better watching the video I put on as I understand what I mean, as obviously its coming from my memory.

Obviously I forgot to take a finished project image but, I do have a picture of my first ever one.

As you can see I decorated Christopher’s anniversary gift with it.

I also forgot to show you my very me set of crocheting hooks.

Yes I know this is an android case but my tablet wouldn’t fit in.

I’d encourage anyone to at least try crocheting with the help of either someone who knows how to do it or YouTube.

Me. A published poet, Four times. No way!!

Published August 14, 2013 by theycallmemrstibbs

I don’t know if all of you are aware that I’m now a published tanka poet.

A tanka poem is basically a short poem. I have put the wiki link here to explain what  tanka poem is.

When we moved to Caltech I needed something to do so I joined the Caltech Poetry group, where I met the wonderful Taura. She introduced me to Tanka poetry, originally I was a bit put off them by the brevity of them. However, I soon learnt to  love them, it helped me get what was on my mind out there and written down. Eventually I got the courage to send them to Atlas Poetica, a tanka journal. with my first attempt I had tanka accepted and published.

I do now know I spelt Spancil incorrectly, but hey it was published.  For those of you who don’t know the song this is my favourite version By Shane MacGowan

As you can see each Tanka is tagged with a location of where inspired me to write the tanka, which is where the name Atlas Poetica comes from.

Obviously after being published I was hooked. So i sent further tanka to the journal to see if I could get in again. And BANG!!! I was accepted again.

I know the last one was base before we moved here but I was thinking of past events as well as present ones.

I decided to tempt fate and to not be published by submitting again, but what do you know I was accepted.

And this time it was 4 being accepted. You can tell a lot of the time it is when I am travelling for visa purposes.

So I was going through my poetry scribble book to see if I could come up with more that weren’t from travelling. So I came up with some and sent them off. And….

With these two I was going about my normal life on a day-2-day basis. If you can class having an MRI as day-2-day, yea ok.

I was lead there after being complemented on looking very young for my age, then it hit me I could write jokingly that I made a deal with someone for eternal youth if I spent the rest of my life with him. No and I don’t mean that Christopher is the devil himself.

Then the other I was sorting through some clothes I brought back with me from home and I found a 20 pence in a pocket of a skirt I hadn’t worn for years.

I have been taking a break as I had a mind blank, but I’m hoping to soon have some inspiration to write more, I will keep you posted on that one.
